My wife and I both have and use REI Trail 40 backpacks. While they are a bit large and cumbersome for a simple hike, they are perfect for overnight stays or if you have to pack enough resources for more than one hiker.
When we go out on a hike we will sometimes only bring one backpack which we’ll pack with both of our supplies. This lets us take turns carrying the load and also helps us cross difficult terrain more easily. The side pouches work well for water or anything else you want to have available at your finger tips (bear spray, perhaps).
The waist belt helps distribute the weight to your hips, making for easier walking of tough terrain while the pack is heavy or overloaded. And the zipper pouches on the hip belt are a great place to store an RX bar or other snacks.
On a recent hospital stay I needed to carry both of our backpacks together myself. While the backpacks weren’t designed for this purpose, there is a clip which latches across the chest which I was able to use to connect one backpack to the other. While wearing one backpack normally I was able to have the other slung over one shoulder, without it slipping off, by using this chest clip. This kept both of my hands free to both carry other bags and to open doors.
We also use these backpacks for overnight stays with friends, or on vacations. Their capacity is ample, allowing me to fit a few changes of clothes, toiletries, and anything else I might need.
Both my wife and I have had containers leek inside of our backpacks but we found them easy to clean in every instance.
They are available in a range of colors. My REI Trail 40 Backpack is red, while my wife’s is a lighter grey. Checking the REI website I’m seeing them available in black, indigo, and rustic gold.
